Twitter to stop working with US intel. agencies on real-time data-mining

NEW YORK — Twitter has barred U.S. intelligence agencies from accessing Dataminr, a service that relies on Twitter feeds to identify and alert its users in real-time of significant events such as unfolding terror attacks, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Dataminr's software scours through 500 million tweets per day. The tweets are classified and analysed based on various factors such as geo-location, topic relevancy, user interests and information value before they are filtered by real-time situational awareness and historical comparison to determine whether a specific tweet is credible and actionable.
The information is then delivered to the user by web browser, instant messenger, email or mobile phone app. Dataminr has a map-based dashboard that allows users to see clearly the location of a significant event is happening in real time.
"If Twitter continues to sell this [data] to the private sector, but denies the government, that's hypocritical," John C. Inglis, a former deputy director of the National Security Agency told the Wall street Journal. "I think it's a bad sign of a lack of appropriate cooperation between a private-sector organization and the government."
Dataminr sent out alerts to its client about the Brussels attacks in March 10 minutes before the media coverage. In addition,it has sent out real-time alerts on ISIS attacks on the Libya oil sector, the Brazilian political crisis, the Kalamazoo shooting and other breaking events.
