Award-winning economist racially profiled, interrogated for doing math on a plane

PHILADELPHIA — An award-winning Ivy League economist was ethnically profiled and interrogated for doing the unspeakable on an American Airlines flight last Thursday — math.

Economics professor Guido Menzio, originally from Italy, was working on some differential equations on a piece of paper while waiting for American Airlines flight 3950 from Philadelphia to Syracuse to take off.

Unfortunately for him, his dark, curly hair, olive skin and foreign accent started setting off alarm bells for a 30-something blonde in flip flops sitting next to him.

According to the Washington Post, she tried to chat Menzio up, but he seemed laser focused on his scribblings.

The woman then pretended to read her book, but was really writing a note to the airplane staff. When boarding had finished, she waved down a flight attendant and handed over her note.

After the plane sat on the tarmac for about 30 minutes, the flight attendant came up to the blonde and asked if she now felt okay to fly or if she was "too sick." The woman said she was alright to fly.

The flight remained on the ground and eventually turned around and headed back to the gate. The woman was then escorted off the plane.

One of the pilots then made his way back towards Menzio and escorted him off the plane where he was taken to meet with some type of agent.

Apparently the woman became nervous because of what she took to be Arabic writing and accused Menzio of being a terrorist.

Menzio then showed that he was only jotting notes down for a paper he is coauthoring on menu costs. He was allowed back on the plane.

The genius blonde didn't reboard the plane. After a two-plus hour delay, the flight finally took off.
