Flint water crisis: President Obama drinks filtered water during press conference

FLINT, MICHIGAN — U.S. President Barack Obama asked for a drink of water during a speech on the lead-contamination crisis in the poverty-stricken city of Flint, Michigan on Wednesday.

“I will not rest, and I'm going to make sure that the leaders at every level of government don't rest, until every drop of water that flows to your homes is safe to drink, and safe to cook with, and safe to bathe in because that's part of the basic responsibilities of a government in the United States of America,” President Obama said during the press conference, after he had a small glass of filtered water from the city struggling with contaminated water.

Flint changed its water source from the Detroit system, which draws water from Lake Huron, to the Flint River in April 2014 as a cost-saving option. Reports found that Flint River’s water is more corrosive than Lake Huron’s, and caused high levels of lead to leach out of the city’s aging pipes into the water supply.

Flint officials assured everyone that the water was perfectly safe at first. However, after it was revealed that the water was indeed contaminated, officials suggested that residents begin boiling their water and handed out water filters for the public to use. A state of emergency was declared in Flint in January.
