'Aligarh' Movie Review By Pankhurie Mulasi | Manoj Bajpai, Rajkumar Rao

The film is based on a true incident, which narrates the story of Professor Siras, who used to teach at Aligarh Muslim University and he got suspended from his job for being gay. Can you believe that? He got terminated from his service because he was found making out with a rickshaw puller in the privacy of his house by two media people, who just barged into his quarters.
Siras fought for his honour at the Allahabad HC aur baad mein court ke saamne ye saabit hogaya that he was a victim of college politics. Lekin us se bhi zada dukh ki baat ye hai that this incident happened during the period when homosexuality was decriminalized by the Delhi High Court.
Manoj Bajpayee ne 64 saal ke Proffessor Siras ka role play kia hai aur unhone apne kirdaar ko is khubsoorati se nibhaya hai that you end up getting mesmerized by his intense performance. He is not the usual stereotypical gay that you see in sex-comedies, Manoj’s Siras is intellectual, poetic with just a few streaks of effeminacy.
Manoj ko is character mein dekh ke aapko yakin nahi hoga ki yeh wahi actor hai jisne shool aur Satya jaisi filmon mein aise macho characters play kiye hai. He has bowled us over with this never-before explored side of his. It’s a treat to watch him play Siras.
Siras se relate karna easy hai because wo ek aam insaan hai jo court ki hearing mein so jaata hai, like all of us he doesn’t want people to make fun of his feelings, he doesn't want to get discriminated for being a certain way, and like everyone he also doesn’t want other people’s nose in his business.
Rajkummar Rao is playing a young journalist Deepu Sebastian jo Siras ki story ko follow karta hai aur unhe unka haq dilane mein unki madad karta hai. Rao is a terrific actor and he has proved it once again with Aligarh. He is perfect as the naïve, young and enthusiastic journo.

Hansal Mehta has handled the film with remarkable sensitivity and I would like to thank him for not turning Siras into a caricature. Hanal Mehta k film’s banana ka ek alag style hai and like all his previous, this film is also very niche. It’s long drawn silences and poignant pauses will totally engulf you.The film is very relevant kyunki wo sirf gay rights k baarey mein hi baat nahi karti it also talks about the prejudices prevalent in our society..
Though the film is good, it has its own drawbacks. Film ka screenplay bahut slow hai and its not very gripping. Some scenes are very stretched while some were totally not required jaise ek scene mein Rajkummar ko apni editor ke sath cozy hotey huey dikhaya hai. It seems wo scene sirf monotony todhney ke liye rakha gaya hai, ya sirf filmko thodha spice up karne ke liye, it really wasn’t required. Also kyunki Manoj ke character ka kuch background nahi dikhaya gaya hai it becomes a little difficult to emotionally connect with him.

All in all, if you are a sucker for performances then you should definitely watch Aligarh. Agar aapko commercial masala films pasand hai to app is movie see door rahey. I will give it a rating of 3.5 stars.
