Searing temperature rises will make parts of Middle East and North Africa uninhabitable, researchers say

MAINZ, GERMANY — A group of researchers believes temperatures in the Middle East and North Africa will rise dramatically over the course of the 21st century.
Researchers of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and the Cyprus Institute in Nicosia found even if Earth's temperature were to increase by two degrees Celsius on average, the temperatures in summer in Middle East and North Africa will increase more than twofold.
The temperature in those areas could rise to 46 degrees Celsius during daytime by mid-century, and it could be as high as 50 degrees Celsius at the end of the century, with heat waves occurring ten times more often than now.
Also, these areas will experience 80 days of extreme hot weather per year by mid-century and up to 118 days by the end of the century comparing to just 16 days between 1986 to 2005.
"Climate change will significantly worsen the living conditions in the Middle East and in North Africa. Prolonged heat waves and desert dust storms can render some regions uninhabitable, which will surely contribute to the pressure to migrate," says Jos Lelieveld, director at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry and Professor at the Cyprus Institute.
