Two killed when giant waves send world's 'most beautiful' bike path crashing into the sea

RIO DE JANEIRO — Once hailed by Rio's Mayor Eduardo Paes as "the most beautiful bike path in the world," a newly built bike path in Rio de Janeiro crumbled into the Atlantic Ocean on Thursday morning.

The collapsed section of the bikeway is part of the 3-km-long Tim Maia Bike Path, which skirts Brazil's Atlantic coast and is elevated by concrete and metal pillars.

Witnesses say five people were on the bike path when massive waves crashed against the side of the bike lane and reportedly lifted a 50-meter-long stretch of the path. The waves then sent the section crashing into the rocks and water below.

Two male bodies were rescued from the sea by helicopters while others may still be missing, reported the Guardian.

The cause of the deadly accident is still unknown, and it's not clear whether shoddy workmanship is to blame. However, in the weeks following the bike path's opening, there were already reports of some wear and tear in several locations along the path.

According to the BBC, this section of the bike path opened in January and cost approximately $13 million to build.
