Clinton and Trump clinch big wins in New York primaries

NEW YORK — After last week's relatively heated Democratic debate, all eyes were on New York on Tuesday as the two Democratic candidates fought for votes in their old stomping grounds.

By Tuesday night, it was clear that former New York senator Hillary Clinton had clinched a win by a far wider margin than the majority of polls predicted. With 98 percent of the precincts reporting by 2 a.m. on Wednesday, the New York Times estimates that Clinton is up by nearly 16 points with nearly 58 percent of the votes counted.

This has sent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and his supporters grumbling about how independent voters weren't able to participate in the state's primary. Independent voters in New York needed to have switched their party registration by October of last year in order to vote in the primary, a rule that many voters seemed unaware of.

Results of Tuesday's primaries should end Sander's claim that Clinton's hitching a ride to the White House from the faux Democrats in the South, a statement that's done more damage for him than good.

Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump unsurprisingly took home a huge win as well, taking him that much closer to the nomination and the Oval Office.

Maybe Trump's win reflects how popular he is in his home state, but he's done pretty well in the Northeast so far, reported FiveThirtyEight. So, more wins for Trump are probably expected next week in Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Maryland, Delaware and Connecticut.
