Trio sues Spirit Airlines for allowing drunken passengers to start epic catfight

NEW YORK — An in-flight fight over loud music is making things a bit bumpy for Spirit Airlines after three passengers involved in the scuffle sued the carrier last Thursday.

The three women are claiming Spirit made things worse by serving too much alcohol and failed to protect them from injury.

The latter part of the brawl was filmed by other passengers. The videos of the women grabbing and slapping each other quickly went viral last month.

"I am upset that the Spirit Airlines failed to protect us, disregarded our safety, and instead continued to serve the women in front of us alcoholic beverages even though they were clearly intoxicated and behaving aggressively," passenger and plaintiff Tykisha Diodato said in a statement.

Diodato and her companions — fellow plaintiffs Lisa Zampella and Danielle Fonda-Thomas — were on the March 9 flight from Baltimore to Los Angeles.

They claim that three other female passengers sitting close to them were inebriated during the flight, played loud music from a bluetooth speaker for hours, sang loudly and stood and danced in the cabin, their lawyer Gloria Allred said at a New York press conference.

After they were asked to turn down the volume, they did so for a few minutes, but then turned up the volume even higher, Allred said.

The plaintiffs claim that a female flight attendant who allegedly was dancing to the women's music earlier in the flight served them more alcohol despite their aggressive behaviour.

After the flight touched down at LAX, the drunk women allegedly began shouting offensive and racist remarks and started the fight, Allred said.

According to their lawyer, when Ms. Fonda-Thomas informed them that their language was inappropriate in front of children, one of the drunk females turned around and began assaulting her.

After a second intoxicated passenger began attacking Fonda-Thomas, Diodato and Zampella jumped to her defense.

The plaintiffs are seeking compensatory and punitive damages at trial.
