THOUSAND OAKS, CALIFORNIA — A community is reeling after a science project went horribly wrong and killed a high school senior in Southern California.

The Ventura County Star reports that 18-year-old Bernard Moon was with a 17-year-old friend in the courtyard of Madrona Elementary School Monday night, experimenting with a homemade rocket. They attached the rocket to a skateboard as part of a science research project for Thousand Oaks High School, where Moon was a senior. The rocket was meant to propel the skateboard forward, but instead exploded.

Moon suffered critical injuries from the blast, while his friend sustained minor injuries. Both were brought to the hospital, where Moon was later pronounced dead, according to the Associated Press.

Details of the rocket's design, or the chemicals used, have not been released, though police are investigating the incident and trying to figure out what caused the rocket to explode.
