United Airlines flight attendant intentionally deploys emergency chute, bolts from plane

HOUSTON — A United Airlines flight attendant deliberately deployed the emergency evacuation slide after a flight from Sacramento, California, landed at Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport on Monday, April 4.

According to an United Airlines representative, the incident occurred around noon after Flight 1246 landed in Houston. The flight attendant deployed the evacuation slide when the aircraft reached Gate C43 and came to a full stop. The attendant threw her bag down the slide before jumping out shortly after.

Neither police nor the airline have revealed why the attendant evacuated the flight.

After sliding down the chute, the unidentified attendant took a few steps before grabbing her bag and walking away.

Meanwhile, in the back of the plane, a man was having trouble breathing and needed to be escorted off the aircraft.

"When we landed we were told to stay in our seats as deplaning would take a bit longer," Jonah Vella, a passenger who was connecting through Houston to Munich while traveling for his video blog on YouTube, told KPRC. "Everything seemed to be pretty standard."

The move is reminiscent of an incident in 2010 when JetBlue attendant Steven Slater dramatically quit his job after arguing with a passenger and fled via the plane's emergency exit slide.

The United Airlines aircraft is back in service, but the flight attendant remains off duty.
