The Royal Tenenbaums helped solidify Wes Anderson as a favorite indie director, but if you're a fan of this kind of quirky comedy you should check out Rian Johnson's The Brothers Bloom.
Both films live in romanticized worlds with larger than life characters in unusual situations. While The Royal Tenenbaums is about the strange way a family reunites when the patriarch comes back into their lives, The Brothers Bloom focuses on 2 con men brothers who are about to go their separate ways when their final mark turns things on their head. The films are structured similarly and even use shots reminiscent of one another, and both are very character driven pieces. So if you're a fan of The Royal Tenenbaums you should definitely watch The Brothers Bloom.
