Squirrel exterminators mistaken for active shooters spark lockdown at Arkansas school

HOT SPRINGS, ARKANSAS — In a case of mistaken identity, several exterminators caused a lockdown at an Arkansas elementary school on Wednesday morning while chasing squirrels.

The three men were hired by a local pest control company to get rid of squirrels at an apartment complex in Hot Springs, Arkansas. According to KATV, one pest control worker carrying a pellet rifle reportedly fired at and missed a squirrel that the men then began to chase towards a school.

A teacher at the nearby Gardner Magnet School caught sight of the men approaching the school and mistook them for rifle-wielding gunmen. In response, the teacher activated the school's intruder alarm and contacted school administration, reported KATV.

The school was placed on lockdown. Hot Springs police as well as special operations and SWAT officers set up a perimeter around the school. After an investigation, the responding officers learned the real identities of the "intruders," and the building lifted the lockdown.

We guess that it's better safe than sorry, so it's really hard to fault the teacher here.
