Escaped Zebra has the adventure of a lifetime, then drowns in a golf course water hazard
  • 8 years ago
TOKI, JAPAN — On the night of March 22, a mischievous zebra living at a horseback riding club decided to make a dash for freedom. The 2-year-old zebra snuck away from his pen and trotted off, eventually making his way to a nearby golf club.

Japanese police soon caught wind of the zebra's escapade, and tried a series of tactics to rein him in. They first tried cornering the zebra, attempting to lasso him. But every time they got close, the zebra managed to evade them. The cops were forced to call in reinforcements to shoot the zebra with tranquilizer darts in an effort to calm him down.

Unfortunately, the tranqs did the opposite, setting the zebra off in a panic, as it ran into a nearby lake. Unable to swim, the zebra flailed around scared and helpless, until he slipped under the pond's surface, drowning.

The police managed to pull the poor zebra from the water and made desperate attempts to resuscitate him, but the zebra's heart had already stopped.

It remains unclear whether the tranquilizer dosage was too high and potentially led to his death, but according to a veterinarian on scene, drowning is the most likely cause of death.
