Holy crap, this episode! Probably the most intense, darkest, and most complicated episode of My Little Pony to date. We get to travel through multiple timelines, see all of the major old villains reprised, and see how they would have taken over if not for the Mane 6. Plus, we get some more of the awesomeness that is Starlight Glimmer, who is consistently one step ahead of Twilight at every turn. And of course, her much awaited backstory and motivations are also revealed. This episode just blows most others out of the water with its scale, story telling, animation, and music. Being able to see all the different versions of the mane cast through each timeline was amazing, and just the idea of answering the question “what would happen if Twilight and the rest of the mane 6 never got together/the rainboom never happened” is something many have been awaiting for a long time.\r

William Andersons score of this episode was simply fantastic. It is filled with reprised motifs from previous episodes, both from this season and previous ones. Each villains motifs are reprised for them, some of which we havent heard since the first two seasons of the show. I have so many themes to point out in this episode, Im probably going to miss a few! To top the entire two-parter off, we have an awesome song that starts out a little slow, but builds into a fantastic final part with most of the main MLP cast showing up in what can only be described as a series finale that isnt actually a series finale. I cant wait to see what season 6 and the movie have in store, as somehow even after the phenomenal season 4 finale, the MLP staff have found a way to raise the bar for themselves yet again! \r

Much like the season opener, only one song for this episode, with the rest filled with tons of story and amazing score. However, the final song doesnt disappoint, and gives Starlight another chance to have a solo, this time also singing with the Mane 6. The song itself is about how friendships, like shown in the episode, have the power to change your life and others.\r
\r
The song starts out as fairly standard MLP fare, with plenty of woodwinds and mandolin, and with Starlights solo. As we reach Twilight Sparkles solo part, the song slowly begins to pick up with some more bass, additional percussion, and strings. After this we reach the bridge to the first chorus, the rest of the mane 6 chorus joins in, and the song really begins to pick up and find its original footing. This brief bridge ends in a fermata on the last note as the Mane 6 and Starlight jump into the air (although the song begins again on-beat, so not really a fermata. But If this was being performed live, I could definitely see that being used in the notation).\r
\r
We then reach the chorus, which begins the best parts of the song in my opinion. The melody and lyrics of this part are super-catchy and upbeat, helped by the bass and fantastic percussion parts, as well as always great harmonies from the mane 6. As we enter the ending parts of the song, some great horns and eventually trumpets are added to continue to build the song until its end. After a fantastic buildup to the final note, the instrumentation silences and were left with just some beautiful piano arpeggios and chimes. Mixed with the group shot of the main cast, this is just such a wonderful way to end the episode. The more and more I hear this song, the more it grows on me.\r
