Woman tries to escape police with a cool getaway by going with the floe

VANCOUVER — A suspected thief is now in custody after she attempted to make a cool getaway from Canadian police by hopping on an ice floe.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Craig Douglass told CBC News that 25-year-old Philicity Lafreniere floated two kilometers down the Nechako River riding a piece of ice before a police dog tracked her down.

A homeowner in Miworth, just west of Prince George, reported that she came home around noon on Sunday and found a woman inside her residence, Douglass said.

Lafreniere fled in a stolen pickup truck and narrowly missed hitting the homeowner, but she did run into the homeowner's car.

Police then found the pickup nearby and were able to track Lafreniere with the help of a police dog to an ice floe approximately two kilometers from the vehicle.

Douglass said Lafreniere had started a fire on the ice and the officer, believing she was attempting to destroy evidence, jumped onto the ice floe, which was a few meters from shore, with his dog.

Lafreniere initially resisted arrest but was taken into custody without incident.

Lafreniere has been charged with breaking and entering, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief under $5,000, two counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 and resisting arrest.
