Youtube Sensation Lilly Singh on Body Hair and Embracing Her Skin Tone
  • 8 years ago
I was a bit nervous to meet Lilly Singh; I see her YouTube billboard every day as I drive down Wilshire Boulevard in LA to my boyfriend's apartment. It used to promote her channel; now it's promoting Unicorn Island, her new movie on YouTube Red. Before our shoot, she had recently appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and The Daily Show With Trevor Noah - Lilly has a larger-than-life persona and I was eager to see how she'd handled her fame.
Lilly has over 8 million YouTube subscribers due to her comedic videos; most are familiar with her wildly successful "parents react" videos, in which she imitates her own parents' reactions to things like Taylor Swift's "Blank Space" video and the Fifty Shades of Grey trailer.
As a first-generation Indian-Canadian growing up in Toronto, Lilly shared the pressures she felt growing up as an Indian female, how she avoided those standards, and how she came to embrace her ethnicity and heritage - all while generating billions of YouTube views. And I can testify: she's just as lovely in person as she is on her channel.
