This is an ongoing series introducing you to Blackmagic Design Fusion which is an advanced compositor used on many films and tv shows for both motion graphics and visual effects.
The BG or Background tool is capable of creating quite a lot more than people often assume at first. Not only can it produce a simple black solid that will give you the base settings for the composition, it can also produce ramps, gradients and much more complex and animatable backgrounds using gradients that can be repeated and offset. This tool is great for creating items that can be used to blend with other layers to create more complex end results.
