Celebrities, athletes and entrepreneurs are backing thousands of wish-list requests from teachers in the Boston area and around the country — paying for notebooks, computers and everything in between.
Among the big name givers: Bill and Melinda Gates, Samuel L. Jackson, Serena Williams and Elon Musk — and Twitter co-founder Biz Stone and his wife Livia, who picked up the tab for the Boston projects.
A group of more than 50 celebrities and entrepreneurs are donating over $14 million Thursday to fund more than 11,000 classroom projects nationwide in a campaign backed by some of Silicon Valley's heavyweights.
The initiative, #BestSchoolDay, is being run through DonorsChoose.org, the education crowdfunding website whose board includes comedian Stephen Colbert and LinkedIn CEO Jeff Weiner.
