Jedi the diabetic alert dog saves the life of sleeping 7-yr-old boy

PASADENA, CALIFORNIA — A black Labrador saved the life of a young boy with Type-1 diabetes.

The Nuttall family was fast asleep last week and no alarms were going off to warn Dorrie Nuttall to check her 7-year-old diabetic son's blood sugar. That's when their dog "Jedi" saved the day.

Jedi, a diabetic alert dog, sensed her son Luke's blood sugar was too low, so he jumped off the bed, then back on again, but Nuttall didn't wake up, according to her March 4 Facebook post. So Jedi laid on top of Nuttall until she woke up.

"He jumped off the bed and half on and would not budge when I told him to get back up," Nuttall wrote.

Jedi bowed to signal a low alert, prompting Nuttall to check Luke's monitoring machine, which indicated that her son was in stable condition.

Jedi bowed again and would not get back in bed. That's when Nuttall knew something was wrong and pricked Luke's finger and discovered his glucose level was 57 mg/dl -- a low level.

"Luke was laying right next to me, just inches away from and, and without Jedi I would have had no idea that he was dropping out of a safe range," she wrote.

Luke Nuttall was diagnosed with Type-1 Diabetes when he was just 2-years-old. His mother Dorrie Nuttall needs to check his blood sugar levels 8-10 times a day.

Jedi is able to use his nose to identify warning signs. Similar to a bomb sniffing dog, Jedi can detect when Luke's blood sugar is low or high by smell.
