OKLAHOMA CITY — Aubrey McClendon, a founder and former chief executive of Chesapeake Energy, died in a car crash Wednesday, a day after he was charged with conspiring to rig bids for oil and natural gas leases.

McClendon, 56, crashed into an embankment while traveling at a "high rate of speed" in Oklahoma City around 9. a.m. local time, said Capt. Paco Balderrama of the Oklahoma CIty Police Department at a press briefing in Oklahoma City, according to CBS affiliate KFOR-TV.

McClendon's 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe was engulfed in flames "immediately," said Balderrama.

He also said that police determined McClendon was not wearing a seatbelt.

"He pretty much drove straight into the wall," Balderrama said. "The information out there at the scene is that he went left of center, went through a grassy area right before colliding into the embankment. There was plenty of opportunity for him to correct and get back on the roadway and that didn't occur."

Balderrama said police are still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash, but a medical event was "possible."

McClendon was expected to turn himself in at 11 a.m., Balderrama added.

The accident happened less than 24 hours after McClendon was indicted by a federal grand jury.

The indictment claims that McClendon set up a deal between two oil and gas companies to not bid against each other for oil and natural gas leases in northwest Oklahoma.
