KATY, TEXAS — A 17-year-old boy shot himself in the head after killing an Army veteran in the Texas city of Katy on Sunday in a dispute over a girl.

The unnamed suspect's girlfriend told him she was cheating with former soldier James Ayala, 25, his friend Darian Mitchell told KHOU.

Mitchell said the suspect invited Ayala and his girlfriend to come over to his house and talk on Saturday night after she revealed her relationship with Ayala in a phone conversation, KHOU reported.

Ayala and the woman arrived at Mitchell's house in a car shortly after midnight in the early hours of Sunday. After an argument, the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Ayala in Mitchell's driveway.

The boy ran away and fired another shot as he fled the scene, Mitchell told KHOU.

"I don't know why he was tripping over this one girl, but it was not worth it." Mitchell told KHOU.

The suspect later admitted to his mother that he shot and killed Ayala. She drove him to a Harris County Sheriff's Office substation to turn himself in on Sunday morning.

After confessing to a deputy that he had killed Ayala, the suspect then shot himself. The boy was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but died of his injuries, according to KHOU.

Ayala's family said the father of five was a good man and they were devastated by his death, ABC affiliate KTRK reported.
