Twins pronounced dead after bobsled joyride at Canada Olympic Park

CALGARY, CANADA — Two teenage boys have died after breaking into Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Canada, in the middle of the night.

The boys, twins Jordan and Evan Caldwell, rode their own toboggan onto the bobsled track and crashed. The twins were pronounced dead on the scene, while six other teens were injured in the incident.

"It's believed at least eight teenagers, all males, entered the property after hours and used a personal sled or toboggan in an attempt to go down the bobsled track," Sgt Paul Wyatt told Canada's CBC news "Part way down, the group hit a large gate used to separate the bobsled and luge track."

Police say the boys hopped on a toboggan and went for a ride on the high-speed run, but on the way down crashed into a gate separating the bobsled and luge tracks. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. local time. The other six teenage males in their group remain in hospital.

The Caldwells were former employees at the park. Sliding down the bobsled track after-hours on "dumb things" was a "tradition" for staff at Canada Olympic Park, according to several people on social media who say they used to work there.

"When I worked there many moons ago it was tradition that people went down the track on dumb things," wrote Kendra Coates on Facebook. And others have confirmed the tradition on Reddit.

Barry Heck, CEO of WinSport, the organization that operates Canada Olympic Park, said on Saturday during a press conference that he doesn't recall any previous incidents like this one where someone broke in to use the track after hours.

"I've heard of incidents of people coming into the park," he said. "I do not know of any incidents of anyone being on the sliding track."

Portions of the tracks have been closed since the incident, and officials have yet to set a date for when it will reopen. The park hosted events during the 1988 Winter Olympics. Several World Cup events are held at the site as well.
