'Hijarbie' is blowing up on Instagram and taking doll fashion world by storm

ABUJA, NIGERIA — Last month, Mattel introduced a new line of Barbie dolls featuring new skin tones and plus-sizes. Now, an Instagram user has taken it upon herself to throw some more culture into the mix.

Haneefah Adam began dressing the dolls up in hijab scarves, and under the account @hijarbie, has been making waves online. After only eight weeks in the public eye, the Hijarbie account has racked up more than 21,200 followers, and is already getting numerous requests for orders.

Hijarbie sports a modest look, but though she shows less skin than your typical Barbie, she's still colorful and full expression. With beige hijabs, white hijabs, pink hijabs, black hijabs and blue hijabs, Adam has an entire line of her own going, and plans to make the doll clothes available for purchase soon. She hopes this trend will take off and be a good outlet to show the world that most muslim women who wear hijabs are not oppressed, and can still be fashionable in their own way.
