Spain breaks up terrorist cell that sent guns and bomb materials to ISIS

MADRID — Spain arrested seven men on Sunday for sending guns and bomb-making materials disguised as humanitarian aid to Syria and Iraq.

During anti-terror operations in the Spanish cities of Alicante, Valencia and Ceuta, authorities arrested a group of men thought to be part of a cell supporting terrorist groups in Syria and Iraq. The cell was providing logistical support to ISIS as well as the al Nusra Front, a Sunni Islamist militia group fighting in Syria.

CNN, citing a Spanish Interior Ministry statement, says that the support included sending firearms, money, electronic equipment as well as bomb-making materials to the fighters overseas. The supplies were packaged to look like humanitarian aid.

An ISIS fighter was also reportedly in "constant communication" with the leader of the cell, and asked him to recruit women for marriage to ISIS fighters in Syria, reported CNN.

Five of the men are of Spanish nationality, while the other two are Syrian and Moroccan nationals living in Spain.

Authorities began investigating the group in 2014 and the twelve searches that took place were carried out mostly at residences and warehouses. Most of the illegal activities were conducted in the warehouses, reported NBC News.

Since the beginning of 2015, Spain has arrested 83 people for suspected links to terrorist organizations.
