Suicide attacker reportedly managed to smuggle bomb into Somali plane by sitting in a wheelchair

MOGADISHU, SOMALIA — Investigators suspect the airborne explosion inside a plane bound for Djibouti from Mogadishu on Tuesday may been caused by a suicide bomber who smuggled explosives onto the aircraft using a wheelchair, a western diplomat told the Wall Street Journal.

It's suspected that the alleged bomber was able to pass through Mogadishu's airport security because he was in a wheelchair. He then most likely detonated the bomb as the plane took off, the WSJ reported.

Daallo Airlines flight D3159 was carrying 74 passengers when it took off from Mogadishu. Around five minutes later, those on board heard a loud bang and a hole appeared in the fuselage near the right wing.

The body of the suspected suicide bomber was sucked from the plane in the ensuing explosion and found close to Balad, a town around 30 kilometers from Mogadishu.

The plane landed safely back at Mogadishu and only two people were injured in the blast.

Investigators reportedly later discovered TNT residue at the site of the explosion.
