Low-cost UK airline to trial hydrogen fuel cells

LONDON — Popular British airline easyJet is set to trial a hydrogen fuel cell system on planes with the potential to save $35 million a year in energy costs, Reuters reported.
According to CNN, the design could save company 50,000 tons of fuel each year, as well as reduce the airline's carbon emissions. If successful, the concept could be used in easyJet's current fleet with no new aircraft required.
EasyJet's head of engineering Ian Davies explained to CNN that they're "banking on a three-to-five year proof of concept," with a view to persuading manufacturers to adopt the technology in the next 15 years.
Stored in the aircraft hold, the hydrogen fuel cells enable planes to travel around the runway without using any fuel, CNN reported.
In a press release, the airline explained that while in taxi its aircraft currently consume 4 percent of their annual fuel. "EasyJet's aircraft average 20 minutes of taxi time per flight – the equivalent of around four million miles a year – akin to travelling to the moon and back eight times, " the airline's press release stated.
The company aims to reduce it carbon emissions 7 percent by 2020, CNN reported.
