La historia se desarrolla en un mundo ficticio, dentro de 1.000 años. La Tierra ha sido abandonada y los humanos han iniciado la conquista de otros planetas, pero, en un viaje al desolado mundo, Kitai (Jaden Smith, 'Karate Kid') se estrella con su nave espacial en la que viajaba con su padre, Jack (Will Smith, 'Men In Black'). Padre e hijo tendrán que escapar de criaturas extrañas y mil peligros que les acechan si quieren salir indemnes de su accidentada aventura. Sin embargo, en su intento de huida se enfrentarán a algo más que amenazas físicas. Su relación fraternal está bastante desgastada y ambos tendrán que limar asperezas.
