It has to do with the now-extinct bird called Genyornis newtoni, a 7-foot-tall, 500-pound, and flightless creature that lived prior to the arrival of humans some 50,000 years ago.
According to a summary of the findings, "The evidence consists of diagnostic burn patterns on Genyornis eggshell fragments that indicate humans were collecting and cooking its eggs, thereby reducing the birds' reproductive success."
