Italian Officials Cover Nude Statues During Iranian President’s Visit

A number of nude statues at the Capitoline Museum in Rome were recently concealed so as not to cause offense to visiting high-ranking official Hassan Rouhani.

Italy is well known for housing vast collections of classical Roman art, many pieces of which are nudes carved from marble.

A number of them were recently concealed so as not to cause offence to visiting high-ranking official Hassan Rouhani.

Among the Iranian president’s stops was the Capitoline Museum in Rome, where he was joined by Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Prior to the Rouhani’s arrival, the nude statues in and on the way to the meeting area were covered with white panels.

Though the move was intended as one of respect due to Iran’s prohibitions involving the display of the human body, a number of people felt it was a step too far.
