Those in charge of setting the Doomsday Clock have opted to keep the hands exactly where they were last year – 11:57.
In the years following the creation and use of the first atomic weapon, a group of influential scientists gathered and created what they called a ‘Doomsday Clock.'
The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists notes the closer the clock is set to midnight, the greater the risk of a catastrophic occurrence.
This year, the group considered several factors including the state of nuclear weapons and global warming. As a result, they opted to keep the clock exactly where it was last year – 11:57.
That is not intended as a hopeful sign.
