RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA — An opossum struck by two crossbow arrows in Riverside County, California has miraculously survived.

The discovery was made after a Riverside County Animal Services officer responded to a report about an injured opossum on Friday morning. The opossum was found alive near Hole and Jones avenues in La Sierra neighbourhood.

The animal was found with two arrows lodged in its body. One had penetrated its right eye and was protruding through the other side of its head. The other arrow had skewered its abdomen.

"No animal, whether it's a domesticated dog or cat, or a part of our wildlife, deserves to be treated in such a cruel manner," Riverside County Animal Services Director Robert Miller said in a Facebook post. "Anyone who has any information about who might have done this are encouraged to contact us. This is a sick act."

The officer rushed the opossum to the animal shelter, where a veterinarian treated it immediately. It is in recovery after undergoing operation. Doctors believe it has a chance to make a full recovery.
