Man saves three dogs from blaze using ax, gets arrested

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA — A dog owner was charged this week after disregarding firefighters' orders and attempting to save his three pet canines from his blazing home with an ax.

According to WKMG News 6, Brevard County Fire Rescue responded to a 911 call about a fire at 2387 Victor Road around 5 a.m on Wednesday. When crews arrived on the scene, the home was full of smoke from a fire that started from a faulty television.

Crews found 58-year-old Wendell Joyner, a resident of the home, continually attempting to re-enter the building. "I got out of the house, and then I realized, 'Oh, wait a minute, my dogs are in there,'" Joyner later told WKMG News 6. "So, I went back inside to look for my dogs."

When the smoke became too much, Joyner resorted to using a firefighter's ax. He threw the ax through his front window in an attempt to rescue his three dogs.

Following the stunt, Brevard County Sheriff's deputies tackled Joyner injuring his face. Deputies later said that they suspected Joyner was intoxicated and feared the worst when he grabbed the ax. According to WKMG News 6, he was arrested for two misdemeanors: breach of peace and resisting officers without violence. Officials did not charge him for a felony for picking up the firefighter's ax.

Joyner's dogs were rescued by firefighters and have been returned to him and his roommate. The two have set up a GoFundMe campaign to help them recoup their losses following the fire.
