Car wash horror show: Woman who found part of human face sues for damages

BOZEMAN, MONTANA — A Montana veterinarian is suing a trucking company for medical expenses and damages resulting from psychological trauma after she discovered part of a man's face on a car wash floor.

Dr. Kim Kriege made the gruesome find at a car wash in Livingston, Montana on Sept. 30, 2013, according to Courthouse News Service.

Kriege claims police treated her as a suspect in the hit-and-run killing of Alaska man Elgie Bedford, 81, after she reported her discovery, Courthouse News Service reported.

Kriege's complaint against trucking company CRST was lodged at Gallatin County Court in Montana on Monday, Courthouse News Service reported.

In her complaint, Kriege says her vehicle was impounded, and she was held by police for hours on suspicion of causing a hit-and-run accident, Courthouse News Service reported.

The macabre tale began in the early hours of Sept. 30, 2013 when Bedford — who was driving from Wasila, Alaska to visit family in Paris, Texas — was hit and killed by a truck as he walked along the Interstate 90 near Big Timber, Montana.

Bedford was walking along the highway after his car went off the road, Courthouse News reported.

The truck's driver, David Welk, 45, was arrested in January of 2014 after his co-driver reported him to police. He was convicted of leaving the scene of the accident in October of 2014 and sentenced to a six-year deferred jail term on Jan. 6 last year.

Welk was employed by CRST.

Police said Bedford's body may have been hit by several different vehicles as it lay on the highway, according to a report by the Missoulian at the time.

One of those vehicles was a pickup truck driven by Wryan Young, 31. Later that day, Young drove her vehicle to the Livingston car wash.

According to Kriege's complaint, Young's pickup truck "left a large portion of Bedford's face on the car wash floor," Courthouse News Service reported.

Prosecutors dismissed charges of leaving the scene of an accident and tampering with evidence against Young and her father Westley Young, 50, in October of 2014, according to the Whidbey News-Times.
