Window washers escape death after scaffolding collapse on 71st floor

HOUSTON — Firefighters rescued two window washers dangling outside of Texas' tallest building Monday morning.
Two men were working on a scaffolding near the 71st floor of the 75-story JPMorgan Chase Tower downtown when, according to Houston Fire Department, the men experienced a motor malfunction leaving one side of their rig hanging dangerously lower than the other.
The men were unable to correct the malfunction and contacted help by radio. The fire department's rescue team arrived on the scene and pulled the men to safety through a window on the 71st floor. The entire event occurred on the Texas Avenue side of the building located at 600 Travis Street.
The fire department reports no injuries. The scaffolding was later pulled to the top of the building and is now under investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction.
According to statistics from the Occupational Safety & Health Administration, in a typical year roughly 20 percent of all on-the-job deaths occur on construction sites. Of those deaths, "falls" are listed as the largest cause, nearly 40 percent of which are fatalities.
The Chase Tower stands roughly 1,049 feet tall, making it the tallest five-sided building in the world and the 13th tallest building in the U.S.
