US Powerball jackpot hits world record at $1.3 billion

NEW YORK — The grand prize of the US Powerball to be drawn on Wednesday rose to an estimated $1.3 billion, the largest jackpot in the world.

Powerball picks 5 out of 69 white balls and 1 out of 26 powerballs which together make the winning numbers. According to the Powerball website, the odds to match all six numbers are one in 292.2 million.

Scott Norrish, an assistant professor of mathematics at Southern Methodist University, told Mlive.com that letting the computer pick your numbers will increase the odds of winning. People generally use birthdates or other figures which normally fall below number 31 whereas the computer chooses anything between 1 to 69. The odds of winning will also be increased if multiple tickets are purchased.

Actual Powerball payout can vary depending on where a winner lives, but all winners must pay federal income taxes, which is either 25 percent, CNN reported.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming do not tax winnings. Winners in New York City have to pay both 8.8 percent state tax and 3.9 percent city tax, CNN reported.
