Couple get engaged at Walmart, then get arrested for shoplifting sex toys and jewelry

BAY CITY, MICHIGAN — A couple in Bay City, Michigan were arrested on Dec. 30 after they got engaged at Walmart and spent the rest of the evening shoplifting sex toys and jewelry, MLive reported.
William J. Cornelius, 25, popped the question to his fiance, an unidentified 20-year-old woman, by asking a Walmart store employee to read a note he had prepared over the store loudspeaker. He presented the engagement ring that he bought earlier from the store for $29.62.
She accepted his proposal but was caught on security camera putting earrings and a necklace in her purse without paying for them. The happy couple then went to the Bay City Mall, where their shoplifting spree continued.
Cornelius allegedly stole edible panties, a sex toy and novelty sex candy from Spencer's Gifts and a watch worth a total of $80.93. He was caught by deputies at the mall food court, where he had fallen asleep while tying his shoes.
He admitted to stealing the items but blamed his behavior on taking the drug Tramadol during a recent hospital visit. He was arraigned on one count of third-degree retail fraud on Tuesday, which is punishable by up to 93 days in jail and a $500 fine. He was released on a personal recognizance bond.
His fiancee posted bond on Tuesday before being arraigned on any charges. She blamed Cornelius for stealing the items. At the time of the theft, Cornelius was on probation after being convicted of racial intimidation in November of 2014.
