ISIS murders female journalist, Ruqia Hassan, who shared daily life in Raqqa

RAQQA / SYRIA — Ruqia Hassan, better known as Nissan Ibrahim on social media, was a journalist reporting on daily life in Raqqa. ISIS executed the 30-year-old, having accused her of being a spy.

Hassan studied philosophy at Aleppo University and later opposed the Bashar al-Assad regime. She remained in Raqqa even after ISIS took control of the city. She wrote about airstrikes decimating the city and mocked ISIS for banning wifi hotspots. She also shared inspirational posts including the music she was listening to.

Hassan once wrote, "Ok if we don't want Daesh … And we don't want the coalition bombing Daesh … And we don't want the Free Syria[n] Army to fight Daesh … Then what do we want exactly?"

Hassan's last words, written in July, were translated as, "I'm in Raqqa and I received death threats, and when ISIS will arrest me and kill me, it's ok because they will cut my head and I have dignity. It's better than I live in humiliation with ISIS."

Hassan may have been killed in September of last year, but her story only gained traction recently after ISIS started posting under her account, suggesting she is still alive.
