Couple sleeps on a mattress infested with a colony of bed bugs in Manhattan hotel

NEW YORK — A couple's magical New Year's Eve getaway to Manhattan became a nightmare after the two realized they were sharing their hotel bed with a colony of ravenous bed bugs.

Elgin Ozlen and his girlfriend moved into three different rooms during their stay at the Upper West Side's Astor on the Park Hotel last week, but found that their last room may have been the worst. When they woke up after their first night in the hotel, they discovered rashes all over his girlfriend's body and a colony of at least 50 bed bugs on the sides of and underneath their mattress.

The New York Daily News reports that Ozlen's girlfriend suffered about 75 bites on her fingers, toes, arms and stomach after a single night in the hotel.

But Ozlen, who hails from Long Beach, California, wasn't the only out-of-towner who spent a night feeding hundreds of bugs with his flesh. According to a TripAdvisor review from 2011, an Australian man said he was "eaten alive" by bed bugs during his stay at the same hotel.

The hotel has a three-star rating on TripAdvisor and a two-and-a-half star rating on Yelp, no doubt a rating that's plummeted as a result of the video. Netizens have already posted Ozlen's story to Yelp along with a one-star rating.
