Amazing Blue Jay Calls - Up Close and Loud!

Blue Jay's are extremely intelligent - and good actors - with dozens of calls that have not been analyzed or explained. Here are three calling varieties in a row very close to the microphone and loud! The first is what I call the "squeaky toy" call followed by a sort of submissive begging call and then a loud demanding classic jeer call. This Blue Jay is looking for a peanut and I accidentally left the camera running for several hours after their morning feeding. The Jay is using the attention-getting give me a peanut please call first - the "squeaky wheel gets the grease" call - and even brings an empty peanut shell in front of the camera and makes an exaggerated gesture to show that the peanut shell is in fact empty. Then the plaintive begging calls and when no peanuts are forthcoming - the loud upset "jeer" call and it moves on. One of the challenges of understanding Blue Jay communication is that they are so intelligent they readily adapt to their given environment and improvise internal and external communications. So behavior can vary widely across geographic areas and circumstances.
