Times Square NYE will have mild weather, brightest ball drop

The recipe for a one-of-a-kind New Year’s Eve party: One million delirious revelers, 2,000 pounds of falling confetti, one glittering Waterford crystal ball — and 6,000 police officers.
Throngs of partygoers packed the streets of Midtown Thursday night into Friday morning to share hugs and a few first kisses of the year under a blanket of confetti as the annual Times Square bash welcomed 2016 with a colorful celebration, mild weather and some serious safety precautions.
The glittering, 11,875-pound beacon that ushered in the new year was was brighter than ever after 288 new crystal panels were added to the famed ball that dropped above the crowd at midnight.
Musical performers for the New Year’s party included Carrie Underwood, Wiz Khalifa and Jesse J. Mayor de Blasio — surrounded by his family — pushed the button to send the ball on its minute-long descent at 11:59 p.m.
After the iconic countdown, cheers erupted as fireworks shot into the sky.
