Jazz icons: Count Basie has one of the largest Big Band orchestras, trapped in the midst of their considerable powers. Declared often as "the most explosive force in jazz, and" this 60 minutes recently discovered concert taped in Sweden in the year 1962, stresses the legendary musical talents this 18-piece band, which included such luminaries as Marshal Royal, Freddie Green, Quentin and "ButterÂ" Jackson, Frank Wess and sensational drummer Sonny Payne. This is the earliest known complete concert of Count Basie and his Orchestra, which will be released on DVD. Star performances include "the corner pockets, and" A "old man River", and "one OÂ'Clock Jump."
Many words can be used to describe the performance of the Count Basie Orchestra concert in ' 62, time of the concert, recorded in Sweden, but enough is enough: Swingin '. There is a large group, not even the great Duke Ellington when reared back as mercilessly, or easily as various ensembles and the Basie, is a prime example. After the split of his so-called "old testament" group in the early 50 's, Basie was at it again a few years later with the "New Testament" outfit that showed excellent players as trumpeters Snooky Young and Thad Jones, trombonist Quentin Jackson, saxophonist Marshal Royal and Frank WESS, perpetual Freddie green on guitar, and amazing drummer Sonny Payne. The 11 tunes are made here (and reproduced with amazingly clear, pure sound and black & white Visual) include several Staples Basie (as Green corner Meadow "and the original signature of the Basie" Jump hour "), several jazz classics (" I Got Rhythm "," old man River "," Stella by Starlight "), and three figures showing voice Irene Reid. Each of them is a delight with magnificent arrangements highlighting ensemble playing the group, masterful control of dynamics, great solos, more than a few touches of humor. and, of course, that ineffable swing. It is difficult to choose a particular highlight, but a long solo seat Payne on "old man River" may be it-it not only sensational drummer goes from rhythms, as if they were melodies and never losing pace, but the way he throws and juggles his sticks are surprisingly interesting.
