Contrary to popular opinion about the sloppiness of how dogs drink water, researchers from Virginia Tech say man's best friend employs a precise technique.

The way dogs lap up water isn't quite as sloppy as it seems, according to researchers from the Virginia Tech College of Engineering.
A summary of the study notes, "Sloppy-looking actions at the dog bowl are in fact high-speed, precisely timed movements that optimize a dog’s ability to acquire fluids. [Dogs] quickly retract their tongues and a column of water forms and rises into their mouths, but they also curl the underside of their tongues to bring a tiny ladle of water upward. [They] precisely bite down to capture the water. In an instant they reopen their mouths and immerse their tongues back into the water."
