Gopher tortoises are classified as a threatened and protected species, yet two of them in poor condition and with painted shells were found in a single day.

Gopher tortoises are classified as a threatened and protected species, yet two of them in poor condition, with painted shells were found in a single day in Florida.
Both discoveries were made in the Orlando area, and the animals are now receiving treatment at the Back To Nature Wildlife Refuge. 
Area news station WFTV noted putting paint on the shell of a tortoise is harmful because the animals use them as a breathing aid.
