Chile to Investigate Crimes Against Humanity During Pinochet Rule

Chile has created an Under-Secretariat for Human Rights, whose main mission will be promoting the investigation of and punishment for crimes against humanity committed under Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship. Over 3,000 people were killed or disappeared during the 17 years between 1973 and 1990. In other matters, the Chilean state mining giant CODELCO expects to produce over 50,000 tons of copper annually at a recently inaugurated mine in central Chile at the same time that it is engaged in cutting costs and laying off workers. teleSUR
