Turban-wearing Sikh fans hassled by fans and security at Broncos game

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — Five Californian football fans were hassled by Qualcomm Stadium security guards after they drove seven hours from Fresno to San Diego to see last Sunday's Broncos vs. Chargers game. Why? Because three of them were wearing turbans.

The turban-wearing men were Sikhs, who are adherents of the Sikh religion. The men say a guard approached them as they were going through security and said, "You guys got to take those turbans off,' to which the Sikh men explained would violate their religious beliefs.

Eventually, reports say security let the men inside to watch the game, but told them if they ever wanted to come back, they'd have have to leave the turbans at home.

That same day, outside Qualcomm Stadium, the man were also subjected to an extra security check after a concerned individual reported seeing three turban-wearing men "doing something in the trunk of their car." Security called in a bomb-sniffing dog.

The "suspicious" football fans were actually putting a bag, which did not contain a bomb, into the trunk of their own car.

NBC Sports commentator Mike Florio wrote regarding the incident that, "It's one thing for fans to raise concerns arising from racial profiling. It's quite another for fans who passed the enhanced security measures to face resistance to entry into the stadium. That aspect of the situation is inexcusable, and the NFL has a clear obligation to ensure these kinds of things don't happen."
