Islamic extremists may have used $28k loan to finance massacre in San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA — Nearly one week after the ISIS-inspired San Bernardino massacre, authorities have discovered more details about the planning and financing of the attack.

Citing a source close to the investigation, the Los Angeles Times reported that officials believe shooters Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik — a married Muslim couple — received a cash loan of $28,500 in the weeks before the attack. With this money, it is suspected the two were able to purchase the weapons used in last week's attack.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the loan came from Utah-based WebBank.com, which provides niche financing to businesses and consumers. The company said they are cooperating with investigators, but cannot comment on individual loans.

Authorities also believe Farook and Malik honed their skills at a gun range in the year prior to the shooting, NBC News reported.

The Los Angeles Times also reported details an apparent failed bombing attempt by the couple. After fleeing the scene last Wednesday, they left a bag at the scene, which contained a remote controlled car that had bombs attached to it.

Officials believe the toy was meant to detonate when responding officers arrived, but water damage from sprinklers may have caused it to malfunction.
