Suspected burglar eaten by 11-foot alligator while hiding from police

BAREFOOT BAY, FLORIDA — A suspected burglar was killed and eaten by an alligator while hiding from police near a lake in Barefoot Bay, Florida last month.

The deceased man, identified as 22-year-old Matthew Riggins, was allegedly attempting to burgle homes in the Barefoot Bay community with a partner on November 13, Bay News 9 reported.

The duo fled when officers approached. Riggins hid near a lake, where it is believed he was then attacked by an 11-foot-long alligator.

Riggins' family reported him missing the next day. Authorities discovered his body in a pond near Latan Court and Barefoot Circle 10 days later, according to Bay News 9.

Bay News 9 reported that Brevard County deputies were almost attacked by the same alligator when they tried to pull the remains of Riggins' body from water. Riggins' hand and foot were found inside the alligator's stomach after the reptile was euthanized.

Investigators said Riggins' alleged accomplice has not been cooperating with the case, but so far has also not been charged.
