Obama tries to reassure 'Muricans he's got a handle on Islamic terrorism

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama on Sunday declared the mass shooting in San Bernardino as a terrorist attack and said the United States will overcome such threats with a relentless, strong and smart campaign against ISIS that is consistent with the nation's values.

"This was an act of terrorism designed to kill innocent people," Obama said during a prime-time televised Oval Office speech.

The president said the couple that had carried out the San Bernardino shooting had "gone down the dark path of radicalization" and embraced a "perverted version of Islam" that calls for a war against the U.S. and the West.

The Oval Office address was designed to reassure the nation about the growing threat of terrorism and basically heard Obama saying that we just need to stay the course.
Following the shooting in San Bernardino where 14 people were killed by a self-radicalized Muslim couple, a growing number of Americans have grown concerned that Obama is not doing enough to address the ISIS threat.

"The threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. We will destroy ISIS and any other organization that tries to harm us," Obama said.

He mentioned contributions from France, the U.K. and Germany were helping.

The president added the visa program that allowed terrorist Tashfeen Malik to enter the U.S. needs review. He also called for tougher screening of those entering the country without visas.

Obama called on Congress to outlaw anyone on a terrorist "no fly list" from purchasing firearms. He also suggested a ban on assault rifles like the ones used in the San Bernardino shooting.

Obama also talked about the importance of not letting the war against extremism turn into a war against Islam.

Was Sunday's night speech enough to assuage the doubts in Obama's ISIS plan?
