Vienna, Dec 2 (EFE).- The Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan, Erlan Idrissov, on Wednesday asked Russia and Turkey to ease bilateral tension that erupted last week after Turkish forces shot down a Russian warplane near Turkey's border with Syria.

"Turkey and Russia are two major political and economic powers. We believe they will have the wisdom, the courage and strategic thinking to ease tensions," Idrissov said during a press conference in Vienna.

"We urge everyone to find ways to reduce the crisis," the minister said after meeting with his Austrian counterpart, Sebastian Kurz.

"It would have been better if (the incident) had not occurred," Kazakhstan's top diplomat said, while warning that the conflict has the potential to endanger an emerging consensus aimed at finding a solution to the civil war in Syria.

Moscow denies that the downed warplane had violated Turkish airspace, while Ankara argues that the Russian Sukhoi Su-24M bomber that was shot down received numerous warnings as it flew over Turkey for 17 seconds.

Astana maintains close diplomatic relations with both Moscow and Turkey, a country with which Kazakhstan has linguistic and cultural ties.

Idrissov was in Vienna to take part in the second annual meeting of the Eurasian Council on Foreign Affairs, which was also attended by former Austrian Foreign Minister and former European Commissioner for External Relations Benita Ferrero-Waldner.

Experts of this institution seeking to consolidate political and economic relations between the Central Asian country and European Union.
