Putin hits Turkey with economic sanctions after downing of jet
  • 8 years ago
MOSCOW — President Vladimir Putin signed a decree imposing economic sanctions against Turkey on Saturday following the downing of a Russian warplane by Turkish military last week.

The decree, which entered into force immediately, said charter flights from Russia to Turkey would be banned, tour firms would be told not to offer any holiday packages there and that unspecified Turkish imports would be temporarily banned or restricted. Turkish firms and nationals would also have their economic activities halted or curbed.

Employers in Russia will not be able allowed to hire Turkish nationals for work starting January 1, 2016.

Russian sanctions also include a suspension of visa-free travel privileges for Turks visiting Russia.

The decree, posted on the Kremlin's website, spoke of the need to protect Russia's national security and Russian citizens "from criminal and other illegal activities."

Putin has ordered the government to prepare a list of goods, firms and jobs that would be affected.

Russia is expected to release the list of banned goods on Monday, Interfax news agency reported, citing a government source. The list will likely include food and some other products, a second government source said.

Turkey primarily sends food, agricultural products and textiles to Russia and is one of the more popular holiday destinations for Russians.

Turkey's foreign minister advised people to postpone all non-urgent travel to Russia on Saturday.
